This book, and my review in Science, were published a few months ago now. There was still snow on the ground when I read this. Now there’s a record-setting heat wave and I can’t stop thinking about permafrost, again, but differently now. Every summer from now on is going to be different for me because of this book. Every time someone mentions the permafrost, I’m going to give a personal little sigh, as though my grandparents grew up there. I’ll look like I am processing some complex feelings about my childhood memories of visiting that thrilling and ordinary landscape, when in fact, I simply haven’t gotten over this book.
